The Chancel Choir provides music from the classical tradition to our services throughout the year, and frequently collaborates with instrumentalists from the area for special services such as our annual Christmas cantata. Every week, our beautiful sanctuary is filled with the glorious and uplifting sounds of Bach, Handel, Mendelssohn, Rutter and others, providing a truly remarkable depth to the worship experience at Court Street United Methodist Church.
The choir rehearses on Wednesday evenings from 7-8:30 pm and Sunday mornings from 10:00-10:45 am before the 11:00 am service. Newcomers with a love of singing and a passion for beautiful music are welcome!
November 6 – Celebration of All Saints’ Day
“The Lord Is My Shepherd,” from Requiem by John Rutter (1945-) John Rutter, composer of the exhuberant Gloria performed last December, wrote his lyrical and very moving Requiem in 1985. The seven-movement larger work is an adaptation of the traditional Requiem Mass, with Psalms and a movement from the Book of Common Prayer from the Anglican service substituting for some of the Roman Catholic elements. One of these is this setting of Psalm 23. Stirringly set with a plaintive oboe solo, this anthem was actually composed in 1976, and inserted perfectly into the larger Requiem when the rest of the work was composed nine years later.
“Pie Jesu,” from Requiem by John Rutter
This movement from the Roman Catholic element of the Requiem Mass is characterized by the most exquisite of soprano solos.
“Sanctus,” from Requiem by John Rutter
A lively counterpart to the other two more lyric movements we will perform this day, Rutter’s Sanctus possesses a theme whose first notes are remarkably similar to the opening theme to the original Star Trek series.
