A wholesome, Christian atmosphere
Our goal in Court Street United Methodist Youth Fellowship is to provide a wholesome, Christian atmosphere in which our youth can worship, play, and plan and carry out mission and outreach projects.
One very important role that the youth fellowship assumes is to give our youth a place where they can correlate Christian teachings with discussion and seeking answers to some of the real problems they face in their everyday lives away from the church. We are studying the “Youth Culture Lesson” program in which we engage in an open and honest discussions concerning the subject matter at hand. Our youth study what the Bible says on the subject and explore ways to incorporate these Bible teachings into their lives. In essence our goal is to keep the Bible front and center and relevant to the complicated maze these young people maneuver as they mature. Some examples of these are: “Bullying as Related to the Bible”, “To Be a Whole Banana” and “This Glorious Mess” about God’s love for us all in spite of our flaws. His forgiveness is always there if you sincerely ask.
Our past mission projects include collecting over 300 stuffed teddy bears for Gleaning for the World ministry; working with Stop Hunger Now, collecting clothes for the homeless, and serving at The Lynchburg Daily Bread. We have raised money for lung cancer research, abused children, and disaster relief. We helped with the Christmas float for downtown Sunday School. We initiated “Stomp out Cold Feet” a mission to collect warm new socks for those in need. We have been involved in many, many more projects including “Pray With Us”.
Our fundraising drives have included pancake breakfasts, car washes, and noisy offerings at church service.
To play we have gone camping, skating, skiing, biking and swimming. We have been on beach trips, had lockdowns at the church and pizza parties to celebrate various occasions and holidays. Most recently we have redecorated our UMYF room to make it a brighter more inviting place to meet and to spend time. We have also participated in weekend youth retreats at Eagle Eyrie and Smith Mountain Lake.
We stay busy and work together. We welcome any youth who is interested in becoming part of our group as a member or visitor.
